Companies must be properly registered with websites that follow UK company law and meet data protection regulations. Many companies don't follow these rules properly and Which? ensures full compliance as a part of their background checks.
A company's financial health is critical and the Which? team conducts an extensive background check into the financial stability of both a company and its Directors. They also review the company's Companies House records to verify operational history.
When applying to become a Trusted Trader, companies must supply contact details for up to 10 recent customers (installations completed within a year of application date). Which? contacts them directly to assess, customer service, workmanship quality, value, and overall service.
The Which? team examine a company's terms of business to ensure fairness, clarity, and compliance with consumer law. They also demand proof of active public liability insurance and check the legitimacy of all accreditations, certifications, and qualifications.
A senior member of the Which? assessment team conducted a 90-minute interview with Spirit Energy where they questioned us on our processes, complaints handling, pricing transparency, staff training, and values. They also checked our quoting structure and documentation.
Trusted Traders must adhere to Which?'s strict codes on sales and marketing practices such as cold calling, use of images, and transparency around subcontracting. The Which? team also checks company representation to ensure that sole traders are not using pronouns like 'we', and 'our'.
The Which? team will assess actual quotation documents to ensure that they're free of hidden costs and written in clear, understandable language. Traders must also agree to Which?'s dispute resolution and Ombudsman service in case of unresolved complaints.
If a problem arises that can't be resolved directly, customers of a Which? Trusted Trader can access an independent dispute resolution service. This service is managed by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and offers expert, impartial help. It's quicker and cheaper than going to court, and ensures a fair outcome for both sides.

Vishal joined Spirit Energy a few months after Erica and Ian founded the business in 2010 as a project manager, and is now our Operations Director. All of our project managers and installers are in-house, and Vishal oversees them all and is in charge of making sure that every project goes smoothly and is installed on time. Vish has a wealth of experience with both commercial and residential projects, and directly manages every commercial project that we do, including our installations at Philip Dennis Foodservice in April 2024, and Hansgrohe's headquarters in September 2024.
Justin is the backbone of the company and part of the leadership team. He has overall responsibility for the installers, electrical design and sign off of all systems as well doing a technical and structural survey for every project to ensure we can manage each job perfectly. His devotion and meticulous attention to detail has helped build Spirit into the reputable and trustworthy brand we are today.
You will most likely meet Justin on your technical & structural survey where he will plan your entire installation and run you through every minute detail.
"My ultimate goal is to ensure our operations run smoothly, delivering exceptional customer service and top-quality installations to every customer, domestic or commercial."
-Vishal Giga, Operations Director
"I know that the technical & structural survey is a step that other installers don't feel is necessary, but many of Spirit's customers appreciate the chance to talk to the actual installers before the installation date."
-Justin Parsons, Head of Installations
