Spirit was founded by Erica Charles, a mathematician who returned to Oxford in her 30’s to complete a Masters on the maximisation of photon capture by solar panels. Anyway, the maths taught her that a well-designed and well-installed solar system will generate a considerably superior return on investment compared to one where insufficient attention has been applied to the design details.

This customer's new build in Surrey presented a straightforward brief but a genuinely complex design task. The house had a large flat roof with the capacity to support a substantial solar installation, and the household's annual electricity demand of 10,000 kWh, combined with an EV to charge, meant that a well-designed system could cover a significant proportion of that demand. The question was how to get the most generation out of the available roof space.
The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) currently require commercial properties in England and Wales to hold an EPC rating of E or higher to be let on a new or existing tenancy. That has been the law since 1 April 2023. Properties below E are unlettable unless a valid exemption is registered.
