Sigen Energy Controller

Energy Controller - Solar capacity

Sigenergy have released multiple different inverter sizes to allow customers more flexibility when getting their system. There are nine different sizes to choose from: 3 kW, 3.6 kW, 4 kW, 4.6 kW, 5 kW, 6 kW, 8 kW, 10 kW, 12, kW. Each inverter has a maximum PV input of double its rating, so the 12 kW inverter would be able to have a 24 kWp system fed into tit.

Inverter Rating (kW) Recommended Oversized kWp (20% clipping, kWp) Estimated number of solar panels on recommended oversized kWp stringed (430W, 45-55V panels)
3 3.6 8
3.6 4.32 10
4 4.8 11
4.6 5.52 12
5 6 14
6 7.2 16
8 9.6 22
10 12 28
12 14.4 33

*For more information on clipping and kWp, please read here - Spirit Energy - Solar PV Clipping, Undersizing and kWp

Smaller solar systems that do not require large inverters typically utilise one or two MPPTs, as houses in the UK generally have simple roofs. This makes smaller inverters ideal, as they allow you to select the correct size for your system without paying for unused technology.

Larger systems, on the other hand, can greatly benefit from additional MPPTs, as it becomes more likely to reach each MPPT’s maximum input voltage. Sigenergy has addressed this by increasing the number of MPPTs alongside the inverter.

For more information on MPPT's, how they work, and their benefits and limitations, please read here - Spirit Energy - What is MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking)?

Sometimes, even with a larger system, not all the available MPPTs are utilised. This is not always a drawback, as it allows for future expansion. If you decide to add extra panels later, you can simply string them onto any unused MPPTs.

Having spare MPPTs can also assist with shade mitigation. For instance, if part of a solar array is heavily shaded—by a chimney, for example—those panels can be strung onto their own MPPT. This isolates them from the rest of the system, ensuring the output of unshaded panels is not affected.

Modern panels also feature bypass diodes, which further help mitigate the effects of shading.

For more information on string design an the impact of shading, please read our blog here - Spirit Energy - Solar Panel Shading Analysis

See our YouTube video here which shows how we helped to mitigate shade on a client's roof by taking bypass diode orientation into account:

Energy Controller - DNO acceptance likelihood

For any PV or battery system with an inverter rating greater than 3.68 kW, a DNO application needs to be done prior to installation (usually G99). Hybrid inverters greatly increase the number of panels that you can have, as well as the amount of battery storage that you can have. The reason being that you don't need a dedicated inverter for the PV and a separate inverter battery storage.

Because the inverter combines the solar inverter and the battery inverter, the potential output of the system will decrease, which increases DNO acceptance likelihood.

As Sigenergy has released a range of inverter sizes, you can choose the one that best suits your system and complies with DNO restrictions, making it a helpful addition.

More information on DNO restrictions, and how it can impact your system, can be found here - Spirit Energy - DNO Permission

Sigen Battery Module

Sigen Battery Module - Size and Scalability

In addition to the Energy Controller, Sigenergy has released stackable battery modules available in two sizes: 5 kWh and 8 kWh. Up to six battery modules can be connected to each Energy Controller, providing a maximum of 48 kWh of storage.

This design offers significant customisation, allowing customers to select the exact amount of storage needed for their system.

Number of 8 kWh Modules → 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Number of 5 kWh Modules ↓
0 0 8 16 24 32 40 48
1 5 13 21 29 37 45 -
2 10 18 26 34 42 - -
3 15 23 31 39 - - -
4 20 28 36 - - - -
5 25 33 - - - - -
6 30 - - - - - -

These battery modules are fully plug-and-play, making future expansion easy. You can simply have an installer purchase the modules you need and stack them beneath your existing system. Sigenergy is also planning to release a 10 kWh module in the future, which will be the same size and offer the same plug-and-play functionality as the current 5 kWh and 8 kWh modules.

This is crucial as it future-proofs your investment. As long as there is still space in your Sigen 'stack,' you will be able to install any future battery modules they release.

When deciding how many battery modules you would like in your system, it is important to consider where you want the system to be located. If you wish to mount the system on a wall, you are limited to the Energy Controller and a maximum of two battery modules, which restricts your capacity to 16 kWh. For additional storage, you will need a floor mounted system.

Sigen Battery Module - Safety Measures / Fire Safety

Each battery module comes equipped with five distinct safety features to ensure there is no damage to other modules or your home, in case something goes wrong with the battery.

Sigenergy SigenStor Battery Fire Safety - Spirit Energy

  1. High-temperature-resistant pads surround the entire module to prevent heat from transferring to another module.

  2. Two types of insulated pads. The 'Aerogel' pads are placed between the battery cells to prevent heat transfer from a heated cell to a cooler one. Additionally,

  3. Each battery pack is equipped with a built-in fire extinguisher that activates if the battery reaches a critical temperature.

  4. Decompression valve, which releases pressure if it builds up inside the module.

  5. Comprehensive temperature detection, which monitors the temperature inside the battery and activates other safety measures if it gets too hot.

In the event of a fire in one of the modules, it would need to be decommissioned and replaced with a new one. However, Sigenergy has stated that this has never occurred and is highly unlikely to happen.

Sigenergy SigenStor System Fire Safety - Spirit Energy

The SigenStor also features industry standard electrical safety measures:

  1. DC Ground-fault protection - Cut off fault circuit spread

  2. Solar PV Disconnect Protection - Cut off energy input from Solar PV side

  3. Grid Fault Protection - Cut off energy input from grid side

  4. DC Bus Protection - Cut off short circuit fault spread

Sigen EV DC Charging Module

Sigen EV DC Charging Module - Size and Compatibility

In addition to the Energy Controller and Battery Modules, Sigenergy has introduced an integrated EV DC Charging Module. This separate module is installed directly beneath the Energy Controller, taking the place of one battery module.

This means you can configure the system with either 6 battery modules or 5 battery modules alongside the EV charger. If you prefer a wall-mounted system, you are limited to a single battery module and the EV charger.

The charging module is available in two sizes: 12 kW or 25 kW. You can choose from three cable lengths: 5m, 7.5m, or 10m. Sigenergy also offers a separate docking station for the charger to sit in.

This aligns with the rest of the system, providing a high level of customisation to help you create the perfect setup for your needs.

Sigen EV DC Charging Module - Advantage of DC over AC

With most AC EV chargers limited to a charging rate of 7 kW, Sigenergy's integrated system offers a significant advantage. As previously mentioned, a SigenStor stack with five battery modules has a maximum discharge rate of 20 kW (5x 8 kWh battery modules, each with a 4 kW discharge rate). If you opt for the 25 kW EV charger, you can utilise your battery to supply 20 kW and draw the remaining 5 kW from the grid. This enables you to charge your car at the full 25 kW, more than 3.5x faster than a standard AC charger.

Backup

Sigenergy SigenStor enables you to continue providing power to your property during power cuts. It also allows your solar PV system to keep running in a power cut.

To learn more about how emergency backup, and off-grid battery systems work, please read here - Spirit Energy - Grid Backup and 3 Phase Systems

You can specify a custom reserve percentage (e.g. 20%) and the system will always keep that percentage of the capacity in reserve for a power cut.

At 30% capacity of a basic 13kWh stack (3.9 kWh), the SigenStor should power a standard home for 3-4 hours, whilst allowing you to keep the TV, fridge, lights and WiFi on (~ 1100 W).

Tariff Integration

SigenStor’s tariff integration maximises energy savings by automatically syncing with utility APIs, including dynamic tariffs like Octopus Agile. The system intelligently charges during low-cost periods and discharges when prices are high, requiring no manual input for tariff adjustments.

For fixed tariffs, users can input their rates, allowing the their Sigen AI to optimise charging and discharging schedules. The app also offers control over operating modes, enabling users to prioritise either cost savings or grid independence.

Sigenergy say that this seamless integration ensures that SigenStor adapts to changing tariffs effortlessly, delivering optimal performance and significant cost reductions over time.

Warranty

SigenStor Energy Controller and Batteries come with a 10* year warranty, guaranteed for 70% capacity after 10 years, or a throughput warranty, as shown in the table below, whichever is reached first.

Covered Product Minimum Throughput Energy (MWh)
Sigen Battery 5kWh 15.85
Sigen Battery 8kWh 23.77

The warranty is upgradable to 15 years, after which time, the battery will have a guaranteed capacity of 60%. The upgrade must be purchased and registered in the first 12 months after commissioning.

However, for the time being, the warranty for the Sigen Energy Gateway is only 2 years, and the EV DC charger warranty is only 3 years. We would expect this to be extended soon.

Battery Chemistry

Sigenergy SigenStor uses a Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry.

LFP is widely regarded to have a longer lasting life-cycles and better cell degradation than alternatives. It is also generally considered to be more ethical and sustainable

Sigen Gateway

With the release of the SigenStor system, Sigenergy introduced the Sigen Gateway, an essential component for providing power cut protection and enabling off-grid operation. The Gateway ensures a smooth transition during outages, with a switchover time of just 2-3 seconds. It also includes several advanced features that enhance its functionality and make it a highly competitive product.

The first key feature is backup power for critical loads. You can wire essential appliances, such as your WiFi, refrigerator, and lights, into the Gateway’s backup port. In the event of a power cut, the Gateway immediately disconnects your home from the grid and supplies power to these critical loads using the battery. Additionally, you can set a reserve battery capacity (e.g., 20%), ensuring that critical loads remain powered for as long as possible during an extended outage.

Backup Port

The backup port supplies power to critical loads during an outage. You can prioritise essential appliances such as WiFi, refrigerators, and lighting to ensure they continue running when grid power is unavailable. This feature ensures that critical functions of your home remain operational for as long as the battery has charge.

Smart Port

The smart port for non-critical loads allows you to control when certain appliances receive power. For instance, if you have high-energy appliances that you only want to run at specific times, your installer can wire these into the smart port. You can then schedule these loads via the mySigen app or pair them with your smart tariff, ensuring they only operate when electricity is cheapest. This helps optimise battery usage and reduce energy costs.

Generator Input

The Gateway also includes a generator input, which can trigger a backup generator when the battery charge gets too low. The generator can supply power directly to your home and recharge the battery until it reaches a safe level. This is particularly useful if you are off-grid or in areas prone to long-duration outages, providing an additional layer of energy security.

On-Grid & Off-Grid Flexibility

The Sigen Gateway is designed for both on-grid and off-grid setups, making it adaptable to a variety of installation environments. It supports both automatic and manual switching between different power sources, including the grid, battery, and generator. This flexibility ensures seamless operation regardless of your energy configuration.

The Gateway can be fully monitored and controlled via the mySigen app, providing real-time updates and enabling you to adjust load priorities, backup settings, and generator operation. This level of control ensures that your energy system operates efficiently and according to your specific requirements.

The Sigen Gateway is a versatile solution designed for both residential and commercial applications, offering smart control, reliable backup, and flexible energy management tailored to your needs.

Monitoring

The SigenStor system is monitored and controlled via the mySigen app, which provides real-time data and system management. The app updates every 10 seconds, offering sligtlly slower refresh rates compared to other systems, like Tesla Powerwall 3, and GivEnergy All-in-One. It delivers detailed information on key metrics, including:

  • Solar generation – The amount of electricity your solar panels are producing.
  • Battery status – Current charge level, charging/discharging power, and reserve capacity for backup.
  • Household consumption – How much electricity your home is using and where it’s coming from (solar, battery, or grid).
  • Grid interaction – The amount of power being imported from or exported to the grid.
  • EV charging – If an EV is connected to the Sigen EV DC charger, the app displays the current charging rate and status.

Users can control various system settings, such as:

  • Setting a reserve capacity to ensure a portion of the battery remains available for power cuts.
  • Choosing between cost-saving mode (which optimises for energy savings by charging when tariffs are low) or off-grid mode (which maximises self-consumption and grid independence).
  • Managing smart load schedules to power high-consumption appliances only when electricity is cheapest.

The app offers a user-friendly interface with advanced visualisation tools, allowing users to track energy flows in real-time through interactive charts and diagrams. Additionally, future updates may include enhanced AI-driven insights and personalised energy-saving recommendations.

SigenStor Installation & Technical Design

The SigenStor has a compact, modular design that allows for flexible installation in residential and commercial properties. It can be installed indoors or outdoors, thanks to its IP66 rating, which provides protection against dust and water without the need for additional enclosures or canopies. Outdoor installation is particularly beneficial for homes with limited indoor space.

Installation scales well with system size. Adding additional battery modules to a stack introduces minimal complexity, meaning larger systems benefit from economies of scale, as installation costs per kWh decrease with higher capacity. However, for smaller systems, the per-kWh installation cost may be slightly higher compared to systems of similar capacity due to the fixed installation labour.

The Gateway supports both bottom and top cable routing, making it adaptable to different site requirements. The use of quick-connect cabling and pre-configured settings streamlines the commissioning process. Unlike other systems that require internet connectivity during commissioning, the Sigen Gateway can be set up offline, ensuring that network issues do not delay installation. This is a benefit of it over Tesla Powerwall 3, which needs a grid and internet connection to setup, and a grid connection to function , and has no support for generator inputs whatsoever.

This straightforward installation process reduces the overall time and effort required, making the Gateway suitable for various applications. It is ideal for large residential homes, where backup power for essential appliances is crucial, and for small businesses that need reliable power during outages. Additionally, it makes sense for consumers who anticipate future energy needs increasing, as the modular design allows for easy system expansion with minimal additional installation effort.
